How To Answer What Are Your Salary Expectations
How To Answer What Are Your Salary Expectations Money seems to be a touchy subject when it comes to interviews. We want to provide you with 5 helpful tips to help you answer this question in a polite and professional manner. Why They Ask: Employers dont ask the question to embarrass you or to put you on the spot, they ask it to see if they can afford to hire you. Believe it or not companies have budgets too! If your salary expectation is nowhere near what they have to offer, its probably best that you look for a job elsewhere. Honesty Is The Best Policy: The best way to do it is to be honest. Obviously you will want to aim high but you can still do so without being completely unrealistic and adding a couple of 00s to your salary band. Discuss what amount you currently get paid and what you are responsible for. This way, the interviewer can get a good judgement of whether you are currently paid too little or whether you are out of their salary range. Be Reasonable: Its important to stand up for yourself and the salary that you think you are entitled to. Some employers will try to bargain with you, but theres no point accepting a salary that you wont be able to live of. You will have to come to terms with the fact that if you are changing career then you may have to accept a lower income to start off with. One significant difference will be salaries in different areas. For instance, if you are moving from London to Chester, theres going to be a significant difference in average wage. Dont Shoot The Messenger: When discussing your pay and what your expectations are, its very important to adopt a professional attitude. Theres no point getting annoyed and argumentative if they offer a wage much lower than your expectations. At the end of the day, you are there to impress and you should act polite and discuss this question in a professional manner. The person interviewing you may have nothing to do with the decision; they could be an internal recruiter, a trainee manager or someone completely irrelevant, thats why it is important to listen and not to argue. Do Your Research: It helps to research salary information and to get a good idea of what the average wage for the job you are applying for is, along with the average wage for that area. Otherwise, failing to research and suggesting a very high wage could completely diminish your chances of being hired. Good luck with your interview and remember to come to Bubble for advice.
